If you suffer from an injury to your gums or teeth, it is not something that you should ignore. Ignoring a dental problem may result in the need for extensive treatment in the future. How do you know if you have a dental emergency?
Types of Dental Emergencies
There are a number of dental emergencies and you should know what to look for. Below, we list some of the most common dental emergencies.
1. Toothache
If you have a toothache, the first thing you should do is rinse your mouth with warm water. If you notice that your tooth is causing swelling, you should press a cold compress outside your cheek or mouth. If you have persistent pain, you can take ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Toothaches can become painful very quickly, so it is important that you see your dentist immediately.
2. Cracked Teeth
If you have a cracked tooth, you should rinse your mouth and clean the area. Press a cold compress to reduce swelling. Make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible as a cracked tooth can lead to more serious injuries.
3. Broken Teeth
If you have cracked teeth, they can easily turn into broken teeth if not attended to properly. WIth broken teeth, if you see a lump of dental pulp or reddish flesh, you should see your dentist right away. If the tooth is pushed into your gums or has shifted but there is no bleeding, you should still contact your dentist as they will be able to tell you whether it is a dental emergency, in which case, they will want to get you in right away.
4. Bleeding From Your Mouth
Bleeding from your mouth could be an indicator of an acute or chronic condition. If you notice bleeding when flossing, it typically means that you have gingivitis or gum disease. Blood in your saliva, however, could be an indication of something more serious like advanced gum disease or cancer. Bleeding from your mouth is not a normal occurrence, as your mouth is equipped with the tools to prevent bleeding. Even after a tooth extraction, if bleeding is persistent, then you will need immediate medical attention.
5. Oral Disease
Maintaining your oral health is extremely important to your overall health. Poor oral hygiene can negatively impact your quality of life. Oral infections and painful or missing teeth can affect the way you eat and socialize with others. Researchers have found a link between oral disease and other health concerns such as:
– Heart disease
– Respiratory illness
– Diabetes
